Advocates of these decorative items suggest they offer more than just ambient lighting. They propose that the lamps can enhance mood, improve sleep, alleviate allergies, aid individuals with asthma in breathing, and purify the air, among other advantages.

While these claims may sound impressive, there’s a lack of substantial scientific evidence to support them.

The salt used in these lamps is sourced from the Himalayas, a vast mountain range spanning approximately 1,500 miles across Pakistan, India, Bhutan, and Nepal.

Authentic Himalayan salt lamps originate from the Khewra Salt Mine in Pakistan, producing salt with a reddish, pink, or off-white hue.

It’s essential to be cautious when purchasing online, as there are numerous counterfeit products available. Genuine versions are delicate and emit a subdued light, while counterfeit items are robust, shining brightly.

How Himalayan salt lamps works

Supporters claim that Himalayan salt lamps operate in two ways:

  1. Particle Attraction: Allegedly, these lamps draw in allergens, toxins, and pollutants towards their surface.
  2. Potential Negative Ion Emission: Some people believe these lamps release negative ions into the air, which they attribute to various health benefits.

Ions are molecules that undergo a change in charge. Negative ions have gained an electron, while positive ions have lost one. Ions are present in our surroundings, originating from outer space particles reaching Earth or forming closer to home through radiation, sunlight, lightning, or water droplet collisions in a waterfall.

Certain individuals report feeling more refreshed and clear-headed after a storm, associating this with the increased negative ions in the air. Commercial ionizers and purification systems also generate negatively charged ions to create cleaner indoor environments.

According to the theory, Himalayan salt lamps generate negatively charged ions as water molecules from the air adhere to and then evaporate from the lamp’s warm surface. Those who endorse the health benefits of these lamps attribute much of their supposed positive effects to the production of negative ions.

Reported benefits of Himalayan salt lamps

While a few studies indicate certain benefits from negative ions, the evidence supporting the idea that salt lamps enhance health is limited.

Mood and Sleep: Some people argue that positive ions in the air contribute to anxiety and irritability, while negative ions alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression, promoting overall well-being. Studies with animals suggest that high concentrations of negative air ions can affect serotonin levels, a chemical associated with feelings of well-being. However, in human studies, negative ions had only a slight impact on depression and did not significantly influence anxiety levels or sleep.

Cognitive Function: A small study indicates that people performed better on cognitive tests in rooms with a high concentration of total air ions (both positive and negative). However, this did not translate to an improvement in their general well-being.

Asthma and Allergies: Despite the belief that negative ions may improve respiratory conditions, most studies on the topic did not find a significant reduction in breathing difficulties or asthma symptoms. In both children and adults with chronic asthma, negative ions did not decrease the use of inhalers.

Air Cleaning: Negative ions have the ability to neutralize pollutants in the air by attaching to bacteria or pollen. While studies suggest that both negative and positive ions can kill germs, the mechanism is not entirely clear, and some experts attribute germ-killing to other factors. Nevertheless, there is no evidence to support the claim that salt lamps have a notable air-cleaning effect.

Can this glowing rock boost your health?

Despite the appealing claims, there is currently no evidence proving that Himalayan salt lamps release negative ions, let alone in quantities significant enough to impact health. Most research conducted so far has focused on negative ions from sources other than lamps.

In a few small studies involving rats and mice, exposure to a salt lamp showed antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects. However, it’s crucial to note that these findings may not necessarily translate to humans, and further research would be necessary to validate such effects.

While a minimal amount of airborne pollutants may adhere to salt rocks, it’s important to recognize that the filtering capacity of these rocks is nowhere near that of common air filter components like charcoal.

While a Himalayan salt lamp can add a decorative touch and a warm glow to your space, there is currently no scientific research supporting the notion that it significantly improves health.
