Options include deferoxamine (Desferal), which can be administered either under the skin (subcutaneously) or into a muscle (intramuscularly). Another medication, deferasirox (Exjade), is available in pill form but may pose a risk of kidney problems.

In cases where vitamin B6 therapy is ineffective, or if the condition is severe, a blood transfusion may be necessary. However, it’s important to note that transfusions carry risks, including worsening of iron levels and potential liver damage.

As a last resort, a bone marrow transplant may be considered. This procedure is reserved for extreme cases where other treatments have failed to produce significant improvement.
